Azden ECZ-990 Zoom Mic Review

In today’s episode, I take a look at the Azden ECZ-990. As you’ve probably already guessed, this is an external microphone that you can use on your HDSLR or camcorder. As this is a condenser microphone, one would come to expect that the audio quality is simply outstanding. This however, is not the case.

After testing Azden’s ECZ-990, I was underwhelmed by the quality this microphone provided. They amount of background noise this microphone picked up made the audio track completely unusable as you can see in the demo section of the video above.

While this microphone does sound great after processing in Audacity or Adobe Soundbooth, it just adds another step that wouldn’t be necessary with other microphones on the market. Good alternatives to this mic would be either the Rode VideoMic, or recording with something along the lines of a USB condenser mic, and then syncing the audio tracks in post production.

Overall Rating: 2/5

Pros:

  • Great build quality
  • Slightly improves quality

Cons:

  • Picks up a lot of background noise

Thanks to Azden for sending this out for review.
