SmallHD DP6 Review

The Hardware

The DP6 features an aluminum unibody design to ensure a solid construction ready for the shooting in tough environments. On the bottom of the display, you’ll find a component, composite, and HDMI input along with a usb port for software upgrades. On top, you’ll find the scroll wheel and 2 buttons for navigation. As for mounting, the DP6 includes 4 1/4-20” screw threads located on each side of the device.

Power options:

  • Included power brick
  • 26 Watt-hour battery w/ optional bracket
  • Canon LP-E6 bracket
  • Panasonic CGA-D54 bracket
  • Sony NEX-VG10 Bracket
  • D-Tap adapter cable

Accessories:

  • Strong Arm
  • Sunhood
  • Neoprene Sleeve
  • Acrylic Screen Protector
  • Matte Screen Protector

The Software

While previous versions of the DP6’s software had some color issues, the latest update fixes just about everything. The official update will be available on Monday March 14 from the SmallHD website (A quick install tutorial is in the video above).

My two favorite features:

Focus Assist is a really great feature found on the DP6 that allows you to only see the parts of the image that are in focus. This is really handy if focus quickly and do not have much time for fine tuning.

1:1 Pixel Mapping allows you to view the output of your camera in a pixel for pixel configuration. In a few words, this basically takes a 1280x800 crop of the 1920x1080 output from the camera.

Overall rating 10/10

The DP6 really is the #1 choice for monitoring your camera in the field. With it’s rugged design, and high-res display, nothing else can truly rival the DP6 when it comes down to getting the most value for your money. Considering the fact that this display only costs $899 it is the perfect display for just about any setup.

Special thanks to SmallHD
